When warehouse capacity begins to tighten, the instinctive response is often to look outward: more space, additional racking, a building expansion, a new facility, or greater automation.
But there is another question supply chain leaders should ask first:
How much capacity is already inside the warehouse—but is being lost because of the way inventory is stored, slotted, and picked?
In many distribution operations, the constraint is not simply the size of the building. It is the effectiveness with which the available cube, storage locations, handling equipment, and labor are being used.
This makes pallet storage, picking, and slotting much more than warehouse engineering topics. They are capacity, productivity, and capital-allocation decisions.
The Capacity You Have vs. the Capacity You Use

The better question is:

That is an optimization problem and the opportunity can be significant.
